Old Gods - Supernatural/American Gods fic

Title: Old Gods
Fandom(s): Supernatural and American Gods (by Neil Gaiman)
Characters: Castiel (SPN), Mr Nancy (AG)
Rating: PG
Spoilers: SPN 5x01/5x02, End of American Gods
comment_fic prompt: Supernatural, Castiel/author's choice, American Gods
Original Post

Summary: Czernobog tells me war is coming to your people. The Apocalypse has begun
-----------------------------------------

A God walks into a bar.
“Hello Castiel” he says, but also Angel, and One Who Rebelled.
“Mr Nancy” the angel replies, and lets Anansi, Trickster and Spider hang on the name. “How is Odin’s son?”

The old God sits, taking off his fedora. “Shadow is well. Returning his father’s eye”. He leans forwards “Czernobog tells me war is coming to your people. The Apocalypse has begun,” Nancy grins “and you have rebelled, and joined forces with the vessels of Michael and Lucifer. I’m not sure if that is brilliant or stupid.”

Castiel looks up, glaring. A yellow-gloved hand is waved in dismissal.
“Gods are not good at war, not even the war gods. All we think of is saving our own skins”. The Spider leans back, “We only survived last time because of Shadow.”

“It is a good thing I am no God then. Anyway, your war would not have changed much. People will worship what they have always worshipped. The new gods will not last. The God of Railways is a ghost, and Fossil Fuel is fading. The others will be replaced in time, and the Old Gods will still haunt the land”.

Anansi narrows his eyes “It would have mattered to those of us who were destroyed. But you are correct. At least our battle would not have destroyed the world.”
He pulls a cigarette from his pocket and lights it, blowing smoke over the angel’s trench coat. “Tell me, do you really believe your father can stop it?”
“Yes” is the firm reply.
“And you really think he still has the power to do so? This is a bad land for Gods, how many of the church-goers actually believe in him, how many are simply going through the motions?”

Castiel glares at the Trickster god, “I will find my Father, and he will end the war, and there will be peace on Earth and in Heaven”.
“You might want to try New Mexico,” sighs Anansi.
The angel looks pained for a moment, as if he’s heard the line before. “He is not on any flatbread.”

Mr Nancy laughs, “No, but I hear Jesus is hitchhiking there at the moment, he may be able to help”. He stands, puts out his cigarette on the stained tabletop and puts on his fedora. “If you need help, you know where to find me. We may hate this country, but we Old Gods like the world”.

The Spider walks out of the bar, whistling a tune.
The Angel vanishes with a rustle of wings.
Grumble

Question to people on fanfiction.net: You favourite a story, but don't leave a review. Plz be telling me why.
It annoys me that some of my fics over there can have over 3,500 hits, and only 7 reviews. I'm not expecting everyone to review. I know I don't always, but is it too much to ask that the number of reviews at least equals the number of 'favs' on my stats page? (Posted my last SPN fic there yesterday: 50 hits, 3 favs and 1 (1 word) review)

In other news, I went to see Men Who Stare At Goats yesterday with a friend, and we both very much enjoyed it. It's pretty darn funny in places, although it was more of a serious film than I was expecting. Clooney and McGregor were really good, and I love what Bob and Bill did to the eggs! (Ha! Now you'll have to go see it to know what I'm on about!)

And finally, if you're in the UK, don't forget your minute silence at 11.
My thoughts are with all soldiers today, still serving and retired. I'm wearing my poppy this year for my Great-great Grandfather, Lt. Charles Sandalls, who died in the First World War.

They were the doubters, your faith was strong. As strong on the day you were commanded to lift Dean Winchester out of the pit as the day you were created.

But how quickly then your faith started shattering. Your faith in your Brothers, in what was right. Faith that you were doing God’s work, even though you always maintained your faith in Him.

One little person, so young in comparison to so many things. One wholly unique man has broken open your mind, with his words and with his actions, and sowed the seeds. Dean Winchester dared you to question it all and you found yourself doing so.

It worries you. It liberates you.
It terrifies you.
Welcome to existence, Angel. Welcome to the world. It has changed since you last stepped here.

And so you came to this.
To standing in a kitchen, facing the entire Host with nothing and no one to aid you but a seer. A man who wrote the Coming of the Apocalypse, but not the freedom of an Angel’s will, and so you have one more moment of hope before Ramiel tears your wings, Zerachiel lifts Jimmy’s battered soul free, and Raphael burns away your grace.

There is a long moment when the shell that contains what is left of you dangles from the hands of the Archangels, before you are consumed by light.

It burns.
You scream.
The Host tremble…

…But you live.
Your Father has saved you, so that you might save the world.
Start, Castiel, with the one who made you doubt.

I have so much work it's not even funny. If you don't hear from me for a while, don't worry, I've only been crushed by the towering pile of reading material needed for my dissertation...

Okay, so maybe it's not quite that bad, but we have to do a presentation on our dissertations in a couple of weeks, and I have no idea what we actually have to talk about, and I'm going first! :(

Things I'm watching:
- Merlin - Just as good as last year, and I'm liking all the little bits of Arthurian legend that are starting to creep in.

- True Blood - OMG BRILIANT! Yet something I will never, ever watch with a family member in the room.

- How I Met Your Mother - very amusing, and flat mate and I are agreed that Barney is Awesome!

- Supernatural - I'm watching it in completely the wrong order. Flatmate has the DVD boxsets that are out. I watched s1 and s2 with her the year before last, when we were living together. She's back now, and we've started watching s3, but last year everyone got really excited by s4, so I sort of know the general story arc. And I've also started watching s5 so I can keep up with everyone else...

It’s like The Coat and the Angel have become one merged entity, Castiel-and-The-Coat, The-Coat-and-Cas. Impossible to think of one without the other.

Yet, Cas isn’t wearing The Coat right now. He’s sitting on a step, and said garment is currently a handful of beige rags in Dean’s hand.
“Dude, I think The Coat is dead,” he says. The Angel gives him a mournful look, which also manages to portray: ‘Your human expressions confuse me. What are you talking about?’
Which is a look Dean knows really well.

The thing that destroyed The Coat (some kind of demonic beast with huge claws and a name Dean will never be able to pronounce), is a pile of dust and fur balls thanks to a silver knife and one of Cas’ spells.
Unfortunately it got a couple of hits in first. Dean is nursing bruised ribs and probably a minor concussion. Cas’ suit jacket hasn’t fared much better than The Coat, and he is bleeding from several long gashes down his back (apparently when he told Bobby he was cut off from Heaven and couldn’t heal people, he was including himself).

Dean helps the Angel up and guides him to the Impala. “Come on,” he says, dropping the ruined Coat on the ground, “I’ll buy you a new one”.
I know that the majority of the Merlin fandom loves Arthur/Merlin, but it also seems to be leaking into the mainstream.
I opened the new issue of the Radio Times, to find they printed this letter:

I wish to express my desire for a plot development in Merlin that many will have imagined - a romance between Merlin and Arthur. There's undeniable chemistry. Subtle comments and glances are continually exchanged.
Merlin himself acknowledges: "Everything I do is for him". It would be a waste if Arthur were simply paired off with Gwen and Merlin with Morgana.
The show has taken an unorthodox approach to Camelot - why not take it in another direction?

Holly Angel, Leeds

There is also a pic of Merlin and Arthur with the caption Dream couple - Merlin and Arthur: made for each other?

I am most amused :D

I appear to have fallen into the Black Hole that is A New Fandom.
And it's not like I needed a new plaything, I have plenty of toys already. A group of 4 criminals (a hacker, a grifter, a thief and a 'hitter') led by an 'honest man', who go around stealing things and running cons against bad, corrupt people, for the sake of their clients.

Anyway, furthering the case against comment_fic, yesterday I found myself writing for one of the Leverage prompts. A Hitter who doesn’t want to Hit.

No, that’s not right. He’s fine with the hitting, but he doesn’t want to kill anymore. He’s spent half his lifetime bloodying his fists on other people’s bodies. He’s stolen artwork and jewels, people and fucking monkeys. He’s played real Russian Roulette, and walked away from a thousand fights in a hundred different countries, leaving a trail of blood and bodies behind him.

He liberated Croatia.

He is a violent man, living worlds apart from hackers and grifters and thieves. Sometimes he’s amazed he made it this far, lived this long. He never expected to make it to retirement (still doesn’t, when he’s being honest with himself, although he can’t figure out if being honest is easier or harder these days). He’s good at what he does, but he’s tired of it now. Been there, done that, got the scars to prove it. Seen one war, seen them all. Doesn’t need to see another (prays to any deity that might still be listening, not to see another).

The rush comes slower now, the adrenaline of a fight drains away more quickly.
The nightmares come more often. A parade of faces, those he couldn’t save, those he needed saving from.

Those who needed saving from him.
Merlin

Our favourite boy wizard (Harry Potter got nuthin!) is back! *dances*

I was slightly obsessed with the show last year, and I believe that this year will be no different, apart from I may have a little more time to spend on the obsessing :)

The first episode has got us off to a good start, with people being awesome, and Merlin et al saving the day, and the gayness, and the pretty clothes (I love Morgana's dresses!)
Clotpole is now my new favourite insult.

A return to student life

I'm back a Uni again. Mum and Dad helped me move my stuff in yesterday.
I'm in the same flat as last year, which is good because it means I already know exactly where I'm going to put all my things :)

I am 2 weeks early (Freshers week is next week), but I need to get a head start on my dissertation and clock up some extra hours at work.
Not that I'm complaining about having the place to myself for a while!

Inglorious B******s

A most excellent cinematic experience. It wasn't what I was expecting, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

It is maybe not the most historically accurate of films, but this is compensated by plenty of blood and body parts.
I loved the bar scene, and the interaction between Reiner and Lander. And did anyone else feel really sorry for Zoller, or is that just me?

My sole problem with the film - not enough of the Basterds themselves.

Am going to see Inglorious Basterds this afternoon, and I am very excited :D

Although the pre-watershed trailers which call it Inglorious make me think of a rapper film for some reason.

You can learn a lot about someone by the music they listen to. So here is the game! Hit shuffle on your ipod or mp3 player and write down the first 25 songs. No cheating or skipping songs that are shameful. That is the fun! Then tag your friends.

Borrowed from missyvortexdv

1) If I didn't know any better - Alison Krauss & Union Station
2) Funeral at Sea - The Second Band
3) Road I'm on - 3 Doors Down
4) Dizzy - The Goo Goo Dolls
5) The Finish Line - Snow Patrol
6) Fans - Kings of Leon
7) Siren Song - Bat for Lashes
8) Crawling in the dark - Hoobastank
9) Accentuate the positive - Ella Fitzgerald
10) All that I am - Rob Thomas
11) Learnt my lesson well - Kaiser Chiefs
12) Guess God thinks I'm Abel - Oasis
13) Growing Pains - La Roux
14) Confessor - Annuals
15) Someday - Nickelback
16) My Friends - Red Hot Chili Peppers
17) Ragged Wood - Fleet Foxes
18) London beckoned songs about money written by machines - Panic!
Film: The Time Traveller's Wife

I have just been to see The Time Traveller's Wife with my parents.
I absolutely love it.

For those who don't know, it is the story of Clare Abshire, and her husband, Henry deTamble, who has a genetic condition which causes him to jump backwards or forwards in time at random.
I read the book (by Audrey Niffenegger) years ago, and it is still one of my top ten. It's romance, with a touch of sci-fi, it is marvellously written, and oddly believable. The author adds touches which are perfect (such as Henry ending up leaving his clothes behind, because why would a genetic mutation mean his clothes went with him).

The movie is a surprisingly good, and accurate, adaptation. Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams are wonderful as Henry and Clare, Ron Livingston is great as Gomez, and the sisters who play Alba are also lovely.

It's not a happy movie, the ending left even my dad with a tear in his eye, but it is rather perfect, and I think you should all go and see it. And then read the book as well.

Hmm

I don't really have a whole lot going on at the moment. My life has turned rather dull :S

My sister got her A-level results yesterday (a B and 2 Cs, more than enough to get her into her first choice university), my brother is away on Scout Camp, and I'm practically glued to my laptop with a combination of work (12.5 hours a week, plus whatever extra I can do in order to have fewer hours in my first couple of weeks back at uni) and coursework for my placement year.

I am going down to Hereford for a couple of days tomorrow morning, for velven's birthday. I'm looking forwards to the break, although not really the journey, as it's a 3-4 hour drive, and I'm the one who is going to be driving. I have already stocked up on caffine and sugar filled drinks to keep me going :D

Sunshiny times

-How do you know when you are watching too many comms?
-When you get back from a 15 day holiday, and run out of 'Skip 20' buttons on your flist with 2 days worth of posts left to catch up on.

:S

Anyway, I'm back from my holiday. I went to Chamonix, a valley in the French Alps which includes Mont Blanc. I went with the parents and my brother and sister, and we had a lovely time.

There are some great walks and cable car rides in the valley (we each got a 5 day non-consecutive cable car pass for 100 euro each 500 altogether, which was very good value, as we had over 850 euro worth of rides). And the weather was absolutely gorgeous. A couple of thunderstorms in the evenings, and 1 day when it rained constantly, but otherwise bright sunshine, and temperatures around 20`c. I even have tan!

The only problem was coming home to find the Sky digibox had turned itself off a week ago, and so hadn't recorded half of what we wanted.
Thank god for BBC i-player!

Ashes = all good

The England cricket team is currently Made of Win.

I've only really got into the cricket in the last week or so, at the end of the first Ashes test. I can't believe it took me so long, I'm loving it.
Especially now we're 1-0 up :D

RTD has killed me.

Killed me dead.

Children of Earth was imense. Awesome. Genius.

Day 1, 2 and 3: Nice start. Lots of creepy kids (definately sent shivers up my spine), explosions, peril and conspiracies. All good things. I loved the backstories for Jack and Ianto, the families (I love Ianto's sister and her family!) and the secrets that both of them were keeping. A little creepy that they both went to their families when they needed to study a child though.
Of course, Jack had to have been involved in the events of 1965, how would the team have known what was going on otherwise.

Day 4 kept of being brilliant! Lois kicks ass! Government officials are suitably conflicted between 10% of children/everybody in the world. The team have a plan.
It was going all so well, until the 456 fought back.

Ianto. What can I say. RTD killed off the man who I think was a lot of people's favourite character in the show. We can identify with him more than Jack, and Gwen hasn't quite shaken off getting under a lot of people's skin in the first season.
Jack's reaction when he realised it was too late was perfect as well. He was willing to stand up to the 456 and fight to the last, until he knew Ianto was going to die, then he was willing to take it all back, to let the aliens take the kids. The 'not him' line, was perfect.

Ianto's death, whilst not having the immediate emotion impact of the end of Tosh and Owen (a combination of the music, the fact he died in the arms of the man he loved, and the fact that I was praying for RTD to bring out a reset button until 2 minutes to the end of Day 5), set in motion a whole string of things that led up to my simulatenaous swearing and crying at the TV at the end of Day 5.

Day 5. Day 5 was something else altogether.
The reason why the 456 wanted the children was sicker that I could have imagined.
Frobisher. God, to feel that that was his only choice... And Bridget realising what he was going to do and telling Lois how good of a man he was. Bridget, who put the Prime Minister in his place at the end (I thought she was up to something!), Bridget is brilliant.
Jack's pain and hopelessness came through when he was sitting in that jail cell, even though he had kept it together in front of everyone else. As did Gwen's and Rhys' when they were sitting in that warehouse with those kids. Andy continues to be awesome, and Ianto's brother-in-law was completely brilliant!

Jack had to make the hard choice again. His family, or the children. I don't think he'll be seeing his daughter again. I was praying that Stephen would have inherited Jack's invincibility, and then I realised that this is Torchwood, not Doctor Who.

The ending of the episode, seems to be an end of Torchwood. With no new recruits, Gwen's pregnancy, the death of Ianto, and Jack running, I'm not too sure there is going to be another series. How could they come back from that? How could they continue without Jack? Whilst Ianto's death hurts, it makes a kind of sense if this is the last series. How else could they get Jack off the planet?
RTD is leaving Doctor Who at the end of the specials, it looks like he's leaving Cardiff altogether.

In conclusion: I loved it. It built me up and tore me apart. It was a chilling, nerve-wracking, adrenaline-pumping, brilliant piece of drama.
And 100%, completely devastating.

Children of Earth

Not impressed. It was all going so well, Jack and Ianto had some nice back story, there was creepy government talk, scary aliens, and really scary kids.

Then they killed my favourite team member.
Fix it RTD. Because if this show is just 'Jack and Gwen, with occasional bits from Rhys' I will not be impressed.

On the other hand, it is nice to know that everyone on my f-list feels exactly the same way :D
