2x02 Part 1

THE ARC TAKE 4:
Connor, Leek and Abby are in the armoury.
Connor: None of this stuff is any use.
Leek: This is the latest in hi-tech weaponry. There’s equipment here that’d make James Bond cry with envy.
Connor: And I understand that. But we need something that’s going to clear fog.
Leek: Well, find something that will clear fog, then.
Leek leaves the room.
Abby: Garden centre.
Connor: Abby, you officially a genius.
Abby and Connor are walking down the corridor to the ARC hub. They pass a soldier on the way, who has scars on his neck. He is THE CLEANER from the last episode. Connor frowns and stops walking.
Connor: I know you, don’t I?
The Cleaner: I work here, probably seen me around.
Abby: We haven’t got time for this, Connor. Come on.
They start to walk off and The Cleaner leaves.
Connor: Abby, come here a sec. Did you see the scars on that guy’s neck?
Abby: No.
Connor: It was just… I swear that that was the guy from the shopping mall, the cleaner. After the raptor attacked, he just vanished. Come on, you must remember him.
Abby: I didn’t really look at him. And anyway, why would one of Lester’s soldiers pretend to be a cleaner in a shopping mall? Come on.
Connor: It just really… Really did look like him.

OFFICE BLOCK TAKE 4:
Stephen is walking down a corridor, through the fog.
Stephen: Cutter?
A worm moves, Stephen stands to the side to avoid it. He is in front of the doors of a lift, and he starts prising them open with his fingers. The worm raises it’s head and starts sniffing around, very close to Stephen’s face. As more worms come down the corridor, Stephen fiddles with his watch, setting an alarm. He chucks the watch down the corridor as the alarm goes off, and the worm is distracted. All of the worms go after the watch.
Stephen slides through the lift doors and into the empty lift shaft, standing with his back to the doors. He gets his phone out and calls a number.

Stephen: Yeah, it’s me.
Nick: Where are you?
Stephen: It doesn’t matter. Listen. The place is infested, so don’t come looking for me. I’ll find my own way up.
Stephen hangs up. There is a ladder on the opposite side of the lift shaft.

In the reception, Jenny is on her phone.

Jenny: It’s me. Why haven’t you been answering any of my calls?
Nick: Been a bit busy.
Jenny: Listen, I’m coming up.
Nick: No, no! Don’t do that.
Jenny: I’m tired of this. I want to know what’s going on and quite frankly, you can’t stop me.
Nick: All right, you take the stairs to the 12th floor, and I’ll meet you there. Now, don’t use the lifts. I’ll repeat that for you. Don’t use the lifts.
Jenny: Yeah, fine. Whatever.
She hangs up.
Jenny: Twelve flights in heels. Men!
She gets in the lift.

In the lift shaft, Stephen leaps across the gap and lands on the ladder. The lift starts to go up, and Stephen starts climbing to get away from it. He reaches the top of the ladder. The lift stops just as it reaches his heels.

Jenny gets out of the lift. She steps out into the foggy corridor, coughing.

Jenny: Cutter! Cutter?
One of the worms appears behind her.
Nick is in the stairwell. He hears Jenny scream and runs into the corridor.

Jenny: Cutter! No, no!
Nick: Great.
Jenny: Cutter!
Nick grabs a samauri sword from a display and slices through the head of the worm which is eating Jenny’s hair.
Nick: The next time I say take the stairs, you take the stairs!
Nick suddenly gets splattered with slime, as a worm attaches itself to his leg. Jenny grabs the sword and kills is.
Nick: Watch where you’re swinging that thing!
Jenny: Next time I’ll leave it to you to get yourself out of trouble!
Nick: Fine! It’s not as if I was asking for help.
Jenny: You were doing so well on your own!
Nick: Everything was fine until you showed up!
Nick stalks off back down the corridor. Jenny follows him into the stairwell.
Nick: You all right?
Jenny: It’s all true. Creatures. Dinosaurs? This is my new job? How?
Nick: Later on I’ll explain everything I know to you but right now, I’ve got work to do. And if you can’t handle it, you’d best go back downstairs right now.
Connor and Abby arrive carrying leaf blowers.
Nick: You two took your time.
Connor: You ever been to a garden centre on a Friday afternoon?
Abby: It was a madhouse.
Nick: Leaf blowers, that’s a good idea.
Jenny: Where’s Stephen?
Nick: We got separated.

Stephen prises open another set of lift doors. He climbs into another foggy corridor and arrives in an office. Something is in the office, knocking the desks and chairs around. It heads towards Stephen, who jumps onto a desk.
Two worms appear. Stephen picks up a biro as a weapon, then chucks it away.

In the videoconference room, the demo ad has ended and Mr Nagata is back on the screen.
Mr Nagata: An impressive presentation, Miss Mitchell. I believe Nagata beer and your company can work together. Congratulations.

Shelley: Thank you, Mr Nagata. Can I call you back?
A worm slides back the door.
IT guy: Shelley, look out!
Shelley closes the laptop they were using, and hits the worm with it.
Nick, Connor, Abby and Jenny are walking towards them. Connor and Abby have leaf blowers, Nick has the sword.

Nick: Connor, you go ahead.
They reach the conference room.
Nick: Follow me. Whatever you do, stay out of the fog.
Shelley: What are those things?
Nick: They’re worms. They’re just a little bit less friendly than the ones in your garden. All right? Come on.
They leave, the fog closes back in. They reach the stairwell and start going back down.
Connor: I think we’re all right now.
A worm leans over from the floor above and grabs Connor’s head. Nick attacks it with the sword.
Connor: Get it!
Nick pulls the severed worm head of Connor, who is covered in slime.
Nick: Are you all right?
Connor: Yeah. Never been swallowed by a giant worm before, but I suppose it’s all a learning experience, isn’t it?
Nick: It could have been worse. Yeah, it could have been a lot worse.
He hands the worm head to Connor, and goes back down the stairs.
Abby: You okay?
Connor: Fine.

They reach the reception.
Shelley: Who are you people? What happened up there?
Nick: Uh… I’m sorry, I wouldn’t know where to start.
Jenny: Listen. There was a fire, you heard the alarm, you tried to evacuate but got lost in the smoke.
Shelley: But what about those things?
Jenny: What things?
Shelley: They killed Terry.
Jenny: If I were you, I’d think really hard about how a story like that is going to sound out there. Just call it our little secret.

Connor is in the bathroom trying to clean off the slime. He washes his hands, then inspects them.
Connor: Caroline’s number. Oh… Why?

Nick, Connor and Abby are by the desk in reception.
Nick: Now, we’ve got to find Stephen, and get him out.
Connor: Right, how are we going to do that?
Nick: The fog’s coming from the anomaly on the 15th floor. Now, the worms can’t breathe outside the fog.
Abby: So we have to get rid of the fog.
Nick: Yeah.
Connor: Can’t we just open the windows?
Nick: None of the windows open, because the entire building is temperature controlled.
Connor: Progress, what’s the point?
Abby: So what do we do then?
Connor: Temperature controlled? Air conditioning?
Nick: Yeah.
Connor: Well, all we need to do then, is heat up the air, and, well, it’ll expand and push the fog right out through the ventilation system. Right?
Nick: Absolutely. Unfortunately, the temperature is controlled from the server room on the 15th floor.
Connor: On the 15th floor. Of course it is. It’s going to get seriously hot in here. We’re going to go up there, aren’t we?
Nick: No. You’re going up there. I’m going to look for Stephen.

Nick is heading towards the stairs, leaf blower over his shoulder. Jenny follows him.
Jenny: Let me help. I want to do something.
Nick: Okay. I want you to go and bully a few traumatised bystanders, and then I want you to come up with some spin to just smooth this all away.
Jenny: You don’t approve of me, do you?
Nick: No, I used to think you were really something, but you’re not that person.
Jenny: Am I supposed to understand that?
Nick: No, I guess not.

Stephen is upstairs, still sitting on the desk. Worms are circling. He stands, and crosses the room by leaping from desk to desk. He reaches a set of cabinets and crouches on the top of them. He gets out his phone.
Stephen: Cutter, hi. I’m on the 13th floor, don’t know exactly where.
Nick: What are you waiting for? Come down.
Stephen: Yeah, a bit of a problem with that. Leave it with me.

Abby and Connor are climbing the stairs. They’ve reached the 14th floor.
Connor: It’s hard work this. May have to go back to the gym. I can’t believe I washed Caroline’s number off. Such an idiot.
Abby: I know. Shame.
Connor: She’s going to think I’m too cool to call now.
Abby: Maybe you’ll bump into her again, yeah?
Connor: Oh, yeah. When was I ever that lucky, eh?
They reach the 15th floor.
Abby: You first.
Connor opens the door. A burst of fog comes through and he closes the door and coughs.
Abby: Foggy?
Connor: A bit foggy, yeah. I think we’re going to have to find another way in.
Abby: Okay.
Connor looks up.
Connor climbs into a ventilation shaft.

Connor: It’s clear.
Abby: Right.
She hands him a leaf blower.
Connor: No, I think we’re going to have to get by without it. Not enough space.
They crawl through the ventilation shafts, Connor has a map of some kind.
Connor: Abby, can you not crowd me so much. A little bit of space, thanks. Oh, hang on, this is… Yeah, yeah. The server room should be just up here and to the left. Oh, no. That might be the right… I’m not…
Abby: Give it here. No, it’s that way, to the left.
Connor: Really?
Abby: Whoever said that men could read maps?
Abby crawls over Connor and leads the way.
Connor: Ow.

Jenny and Nick are climbing the stairs.
Jenny: I’m impressed. After everything Stephen’s done, you’re still willing to risk your life for him.
Nick: Meaning what?
Jenny: Lester asked me to assess anything that might interfere with the team’s efficiency. I thought Stephen’s affair with Helen would have come into that category.
Nick: So, he sent you here to spy on us?
Jenny: I prefer to call it management appraisal.
Nick: And you think that I should leave him up there to die just because of what happened with him and Helen?
Jenny: Some people would.
Nick: Well, I’m not one of them. Whatever problems I’ve got with Stephen, I can sort them out for myself.

Abby and Connor are still crawling through the ventilation shafts.
Connor: 07789678, 07789678…
Abby: What are you doing?
Connor: Trying to remember Caroline’s number. Don’t put me off. 07789678…

Nick and Jenny are still climbing the stairs.
Jenny: Cutter, you’re the team leader, we can’t afford to lose you. Now, the most sensible thing would be to let Stephen fend for himself.
Nick: Yeah, yeah. You’re right. Now, are you coming? Or are you going to stay down here and be sensible?

Stephen is still perched on top of the cabinet. It shudders as something bumps into it, and he narrowly avoids getting covered in slime.
He makes a run for it across the desks. One of the worms manages to grab his ankle, and he is knocked to the floor. He stands up, and a worm rears up in front of him.

Abby drops from the ventilation shaft into the server room and takes a look at the machines. Connor sticks his head out of the shaft.

Connor: Abby, I think that’s the one. That’s the aircon, yeah.
Abby opens the door to the controls and puts up the temperature.
Connor: That’s enough. Come back.
Abby crosses to the ventilation shaft. She is about to climb back in, when a worm appears in the door.
Connor: Worm.

Stephen has grabbed the worm that was in front of him. He slams it’s head in the photocopier, accidentally photocopying it.

Abby is kick-boxing the worm in the server room. She knocks it out.

Connor: Nice move.
Abby: Connor, in your own time.
Connor: Oh, sorry. Come on. I got you.
Connor pulls Abby up into the ventilation shaft.

Another worm tries to attack Stephen. He stabs it with a metal prong, pinning it to a water dispenser.

Abby is now in the ventilation shaft. In the process of climbing up, she has ended up sitting on Connor.

Connor: I can’t breathe, Abby.
Abby: Is it working?
Connor: I hope so.

On the outside of the building, several vents open up, and the fog starts to leave the building.
Nick and Jenny arrive in the office where Stephen has been fighting the worms.

Stephen: You took your time.
Nick: Well, you will run off on your own.
Jenny: The fog’s lifting.
Nick: It’s working.
As the fog starts to clear, the worms start to choke. As they die, the start to swell.
Jenny: What’s happening to them?
Nick: Must be the heat.
Jenny: They’re expanding.
The worms begin to explode. This sends gore everywhere, as well as baby worms, which attach themselves to Nick, Stephen and Jenny like leeches. They pull them off.
Nick: God! They’re spawning. They’re not biting, they’re burrowing. They’re trying to find a new host. Don’t let them break the skin. Got to find something to bring the temperature down.
Stephen: It will take too long.
Nick: Anybody got a light?
Nick stands on a desk, Jenny hands him a cigarette lighter. He lights it and holds it up to a sprinkler. The sprinkler system goes off. The rest of the baby worms fall off.
Nick: Claudia, are you all right?
Jenny: Don’t call me Claudia. And I’m fine.

Nick and Stephen are sitting on the steps of the office building.
Stephen: Do you ever wonder if what we’re doing is right? I mean, maybe the anomalies have a purpose. Maybe we should stop fighting and face them.
Nick: What? Just stand by and do nothing?
Stephen: People should know what’s happening. ‘Cause, we’re going to need to prepare for whatever comes next.
Nick: Yeah, but how do you prepare for a world where evolution has gone mad? We have to fight to try and maintain some kind of natural order.
Stephen: Does anybody really know what the natural order is anymore?
Nick stands and walks away.

STEPHEN’S FLAT TAKE 3:
Stephen arrives. The flat is empty.
Stephen: Helen?

ABBY’S FLAT TAKE 2:
Connor: Nice cup of tea. Here we are.
Connor walks into the living room carrying two mugs, one of which he hands to Abby who is standing by the sofa.
Connor: I just want to say, Abby, I think you did really well today.
Abby: I think you did really well, too. You did good.
Connor: High five to us.
Abby: Yeah.
They high five.
Caroline arrives up the stairs.

Caroline: Hello! The door was open. I think I left my mobile here earlier.
She heads to the back of the room.
Caroline: Oh! That’s a relief. I’ve been looking for it all day. I wouldn’t want to miss your call.
Connor: That’s weird, because all day I’ve been fretting about… You know what, it doesn’t even matter. Do you fancy a drink? Like, not a cup of tea, obviously. Like, a proper drink. You know, somewhere, out there.
Caroline: Why not?
Connor: Now?
Caroline: Now.
Connor: Super cool.
Connor and Caroline head towards the stairs.
Caroline: Oh, why don’t you join us, Abby?
Abby: Me? Um, no, I’m fine.
Caroline and Connor leave.

JENNY’S HOUSE TAKE 1:
Nick is outside, staring at the door. He takes out his wallet. He has a picture of him and Claudia. He knocks on the door. Jenny answers.
Nick: Okay, here’s the thing. Suppose there was another world once, and you were a different person. And suppose there was an accident that happened in the past, which meant that world evolved differently, so that some people who had lived were never even born, and other people grew up with completely different lives. Now, what if all that were possible?
MIKE, Jenny’s partner appears behind her.
Mike: Who is it, Jen?
Nick: You’re busy. I’m so sorry.
Nick turns and walks away.
Mike: Who’s that?
Jenny: Just someone I work with.
Helen is sitting in a car across the road, watching everything.

End credits.
