Scotty

Here comes the sun!

I haven't posted anything non-fannish for a while, so I thought I'd update.

My placement has now ended at the Biological Anthropology Research Centre, where I was playing with bones. However, I'm doing next years dissertation on human bones, so I still get to play :D
And the my first placement, at the Bradford Industrial Museum has offered me some part time work, doing conservation and data entry. 12.5 hours a week, and £8 an hour is pretty darn good from where I'm standing, although it does mean that I'm going to have to give up my job at Waterstones, as I won't have time to do both jobs whilst at the same time doing my final University year.

I have my accomodation in Bradford until the end of next week, so I'm going to be driving across the Pennines twice a week to work at the museum. Which may not be the greenest of things to do, but it will cost £8 in petrol there and back. It's £9.50 one way on the train :S

I'm currently obsessed with Hotel Babylon on BBC1. I love it, it's just so cheesy and colourful! I'm also obsessed with the Sims2 on my NintendoDS, and have combined the two obsessions by naming the hotel manager in the Sims Tony :)

I'm also watching: The Mentalist, Supersizers eat..., Krod Mandoon, Psychoville, Kingdom and Top Gear. I'm also going to start catching up on Psych, which I love, and I am very much looking forwards to the Torchwood special next week.
One thing I haven't watched is the Robin Hood finale. I like that they brought the Sheriff back, but they killed Alan, and he was one of the main reasons I watched the show this year, so I'm not sure I can be bothered to be honest. I know who dies. Am I missing out?

Finally, commiserations to Andy Murray. Better luck next time.

Reading meme, shamelessly stolen from stardust83

01. Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?
Sometimes. If I'm on the train then I'll have a book and a snack (usually a packet of fruit gums), if I'm in my room then I won't usually snack whilst reading.

02. Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
If it's a book that I'm reading for pleasure/borrowed book then I wouldn't mark it. If it was a text book that I owned then I may underline things, but only in pencil. My GCSE English Lit books had lots of notes in the margins, which my sister and brother found very useful when they did the subject.

03. How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
If I'm only putting it down for a couple of minutes then I'll lay it flat. Otherwise I either try to remember my place, or book mark. I don't like dog-earing books.

04. Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
Generally fiction, although I do enjoy biographies, and recently read a human osteology book (Beyond the Body Farm).

05. Hard copy or audiobooks?
Hard copy. I have a couple of audio books that I got free in the Radio Times, but I get distracted from audio easily. Also, I don't think anything can beat the feel of a good paper book.

06. Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you able to put a book down at any point?
I usually try to get to the end of a chapter, but if not, then I have to read to the end of the paragraph at least. I can't stop in the middle of scene.

07. If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away? Write it down to look it up later? Just try to infer what it means from the rest of the sentence, and keep going?
Try to infer from the rest of the sentence, unless it's a text book, in which case I'll look it up straight away.

08. What are you currently reading?
The Last Gospel - David Gibbins

09. What is the last book you bought?
The Girl Who Played With Fire - Steig Larsson. I bought it for my Dad on Father's Day. The last book I bought for myself was The Devil in Amber - Mark Gatiss, the second Lucifer Box novel.

10. Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can read more than one at a time?
I can read more that one at a time, although usually what happens is I'll start one thing, borrow something of somebody/buy something new and read that all the way through, before going back to the first book.

11. Do you like re-reading books?
Depends on the book and the author. I'll re-read books by people like Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman many times (my copy of Good Omens is held together by sticky tape). Often I'll pick up something I didn't notice first time around.
But there are many books on my shelf I've only read once.

Writer's Block: Call Me

Do you still use a landline at home, or do you rely completely on your cell phone?

View other answers

I completely rely on my mobile when I'm at uni. There is no point in paying extra to have a landline when my mobile is perfectly servicable.

We have a landline at home. My parent have a package from Sky which includes the Sky+, internet and landline, and my siblings and are allowed to use that without charge, within moderation.

I tend to use email to keep in touch with friends and family rather than calls or texts, as it's free, and I can ramble more, and I don't have to put up with text-talk (which drives me mad at times!)

Hello Summer!

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather that the UK is having at the moment!
I've spent the last 3 hours sitting out in the sun, with my i-pod and a good book, and have come inside as I was becoming decidedly pink (sun-cream next time methinks).

The good book in question is one that I have to recommend!
It is The Devil in Amber, the second part of the Lucifer Box trilogy by Mark Gatiss. The first is the brilliant Vesuvius Club (which is absolutely amazing!) and the final part is The Black Butterfly (which I haven't got my hands on yet).

Artist and (bi-sexual) playboy, Lucifer Box is also part of His Majesty's (Edward VII's) Secret Service, and he goes about foiling the plans of James Bond style villians with the utmost style.
They're not particularly long books, but they are brilliant stories, and if you can get your hands on the Vesuvius Club, then you won't be disappointed.

An Evening with John Barrowman

I have no Barrowman icon, so this will have to do :D

I went to see Mr Barrowman last night, at St Georges Hall in Blackburn, with my mum.
We both absolutely loved it!

There was a good mix of songs and stories, including some rather rude jokes, which shocked the little old ladies that the woman sitting next to us over heard in the bar :D
The songs ranged from Joni Mitchell ballads, to Ricky Martin, to a remix of songs from musicals in the style of Highland dances (which I really need to have).

It was a great night, very entertaining (and co-starring one of the guys from Any Dream Will Do, and John's Mum and Dad), and I would definately recommend it to any Barrowman fans who get the chance.

A+ Mr Barrowman, A+.
:D

A note on some things

- Any fans of George Gently out there? If so, please come and play at [info]gently_fans. There are only 2 of us doing any kind of regular posting, and we want a couple more play mates.

- I watch the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes film. It looks rather good, and I am going to have to put it on my 'one to watch' list.

- CSI:NY fail! When watching the latest episode to air in the Uk (the one where the Native American Chief was murdered) myself and the flatmate both noticed that the Irish guys accent was suspiciously Scottish.

- Eurovision was brilliant (cheesy pop and Euro politics are a heady mix). Particularly loved the way the voting was opened by a couple of Russian Cosmonauts, live from space.
And we came 5th! Yay!

Trekkin

Because I'm on a Star Trek high after seeing the movie.
Because it's a hilarious song.
Because I spent the whole afternoon scrubbing bones from Hereford Cathedral with a toothbrush.
Because I can.

To boldly go...

I went to see the new Trek movie yesterday with one of my flatmates.
I loved it!

I've never seen more than clips of the original show, and bits of the movies, I grew up on the tail end of Next Gen and Voyager, but I knew enough to get the in jokes (Chekov's accent etc), I thought the cast were great, and there was a good balance of humour and explosions.
Just the way I like it :D

I would definately recommend it, even if you've never seen an episode of Star Trek in your life. It's a great action movie all by itself.

To celebrate, I have found an icon combining my love for this movie, with my love for Simon Pegg.
I may have to dig out my Hot Fuzz DVD.

Icon meme

My brother was in a play last week at the local youth music and drama group. He was Sherlock Holmes, and Col. Mustard (of Cluedo fame). He was very good. Bravo to him :D

ICON MEME

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

[info]croakvegas chose these six:

Pete? - By [info]iconomicon
Photobucket

One of the many icons I have saved that were created by [info]iconomicon, who is something of an icon God.
It probably says something about me that I find this quite hilarious.

Clyde and Luke - Sarah-Jane Adventures - By [info]partofthequeue2
Photobucket

Hey look! One made by me!
The Sarah-Jane Adventures, for those who don't know, is a Doctor Who spin-off for the younger audience, starring former companion, Sarah-Jane Smith.
The icon is of Sarah-Jane's adopted son, Luke (a super genius, who was actually grown by aliens as part of a plot to take over the world), and Luke's best mate, Clyde. I believe Clyde was trying (and failing) to teach Luke the intricacies of slang.

Merlin and Arthur - Merlin - By [info]partofthequeue2
Photobucket

These two love each other. It's obvious. They've just never said it out loud. Its canon-ness is second only to the Winters/Nixon love in Band of Brothers.
Even the Dragon under the castle can see it (thereby earning the nickname 'Slash Dragon').
Here we have Merlin saving Arthur's life (again). They save each other's lives at least once an episode.

Connor and Rex - Primeval - By [info]partofthequeue2
Photobucket

Primeval is a show about anomalies in time opening up, and dinosaurs coming through. It is maybe not the most serious of shows, but I love it anyway (in the same way I love Robin Hood and Merlin).
Rex is a dinosaur who came through an anomaly in the first episode, and got stuck. Connor is the geeky guy with the know how to invent things like anomaly detectors. He also has great angst faces, and fandom pairs him off with anyone and everyone.

RayK and Fraser - due South - By [info]pentapus
Photobucket

[info]pentapus draws lots of really cute little chibis, and when she asked for icon prompts. I prompted her with RayK/Fraser, and got this icon of mountie love :D
I love this show, it always cheers me up. RayK is just adorable! You can't dilike a guy who puts M&Ms in coffee instead of sugar.

Colbert and Fick - Generation Kill - By [info]bzzinglikeneon
Photobucket

[info]croakvegas was the one who forced persuaded me to watch GK, so I suppose it should be no surprise that this icon was picked.
The relationship between these two is great, and epic, and I can't recall another pair of characters that can get so much across in a glance.
This is nick-named 'the eye-fucking icon'. Because they are

A favour to ask...

A friend of mine, [info]helen_a_ is currently in the final year of her media-type course at Uni. She has a feedback questionaire on the videos for her final project, and would appreciate anyone who has the time filling it out.
There's about 25 minutes of video, and the questionaire itself will only take a few minutes to fill out.

I have big hugs for anyone who can spare the time. Thankyou!
